Internet Access: NCC, ICANN, others invite participation in webinar on Universal Acceptance

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in collaboration with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), AFRALO and Green ICTi is hosting a free webinar on Universal Acceptance (UA).

ConsumerConnect reports the telecoms sector regulatory Commission, which disclosed this development via its corporate Web site Friday, March 17, 2023, said the webinar is scheduled for April 06, 2023 via the link; bit.ly/nigeriauaday.

According to NCC, Version 1.of the programme holding April 6 for the inaugural Universal Acceptance (UA) Day, titled, Internet4All.

The Commission stated: “The NCC and ICANN, AFRALO or Green ICT are hosting a free webinar to educate everyone on UA and how it can improve internet accessibility for all.

“Register now at https://bit.ly/nigeriauaday to secure your spot!”

It also said on Version 2, the NCC, ICANN, AFRALO and Green ICTi Universal Acceptance Day webinar, participants would learn about UA, and how it ensures equal use of domain names and e-mail addresses, regardless of language or character length.

Prospective participants are also encouraged to register for at https://bit.ly/nigeriauaday and “help promote Internet accessibility for all #Internet4All #UAday2023.”

Whereas on Version 3 of the programme, the organisers are partnering to educate everyone on UA, and promote Internet accessibility for all.

It noted: “Learn how UA ensures equal use of domain names and e-mail addresses, regardless of language or character script.

Overview of Universal Acceptance 

ConsumerConnect reports the ICANN stated Universal Acceptance ensures that all domain names, including new top-level domains (TLDs), Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs), and e-mail addresses are treated equally and can be used by all Internet-enabled applications, devices, and systems.

It provides the gateway to the next billion Internet users.

According to the body, UA is a fundamental requirement for a truly multilingual and digitally inclusive Internet.

UA ensures that all valid domain names, including long new TLDs and email addresses, can be used by all Internet-enabled applications, devices, and systems regardless of script, language, or character length.

The body as well noted that UA supports the ability for e-mail mailbox names to use characters in local languages and scripts through Email Address Internationalisation (EAI) standards.

To excel in the long run, organisations and businesses need to ensure that their systems and services will work with the continuously expanding and evolving domain name space, said the organisation.

It is said to be “a priority for ICANN org, and is a strategic goal outlined in the ICANN Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2021-2025.”
