In a move aimed at boosting food production and tackling rural poverty, the Bank of Agriculture (BoA), in Nigeria, has proposed a nationwide partnership with the House of Representatives, in the National Assembly (NASS), in Abuja, FCT, to accelerate mechanised farming in the country.

ConsumerConnect reports the BoA proposal is designed to cover 1.2 million hectares across the 360 Federal Constituencies in Nigeria.

Ayo Sotinriade, Managing Director of the Bank, unveiled the farming initiative Tuesday, May 5, 2026, during a presentation on the floor of the House of Representatives, in Abuja, FCT.

Speaking with reporters after his presentation to the Federal lawmakers, Sotinriade said the programme was designed to increase agricultural productivity, create jobs, reduce hunger and address some of the structural drivers of insecurity.

He also said, if implemented at scale, the mechanised agricultural plan would mark a shift from subsistence farming to commercial agriculture, thereby positioning Nigeria as a net food exporter.
