The Senate, in the National Assembly (NASS), Abuja, FCT, has screened, and confirmed the appointments of Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan and Saidu Mohammed as the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) respectively.

The Senators announced confirmations of Eyesan and Mohammed at plenary, following the consideration and adoption of a report by the joint committees on Petroleum (Upstream, Downstream and Gas), which had screened the nominees.

Earlier, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had forwarded Eyesan and Mohammed names to the Senate Thursday, December 17, seeking the Red Chamber’s consideration, and approval to fill vacancies created by the resignation of the former heads of the two regulators.

The appointments come amid recent heightened public scrutiny of the country’s petroleum regulatory agencies, particularly following the recent resignation of Engr. Farouk Ahmed as the CEO of NMDPRA.

Ahmed resigned his appointment December 17, after days of controversy triggered by corruption allegations Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President/Chief Executive of Dangote Group, had preferred against him.

Dangote went further to petition Ahmed to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), accusing Ahmed of abuse of office, financial impropriety, and violations of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers.

Dangote also claimed that Ahmed spent over $7 million in public funds on the education of his four children in Switzerland.

The foremost industrialist and Africa’s richest man insisted that such an expenditure by a public officer is inconsistent with the income of a career public servant.

Though the ICPC confirmed receipt of the petition, and said it would investigate the claims, Ahmed later threw in the towel before further action on Dangote’s petition.

Likewise, President Tinubu announced the resignation of Engr. Gbenga Komolafe as CEO of the NUPRC, and nominated Eyesan as his replacement.

Both the NUPRC and NMDPRA were created under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) to regulate Nigeria’s upstream, midstream and downstream petroleum operations.
