Innovation: OAU launches branded phones, smartwatches on AI & Robotics in clinical practice

Blazing the trail in inovation and integration of digital transformation into teaching, research, and industry applications, the authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Nigeria, have launched the Univeristy’s won branded OAK.io mobile phones and smartwatches on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics in clinical practice.

ConsumerConnect reports the prestigious University disclosed the OAK.io is a spin-off company from its ICT-Driven Knowledge Park, being launched and introduced into the smartphone and smartwatch market with devices designed specifically for Africa’s AI-powered future.

The OAU disclosed the Management of the academic institution, fondly called “Great Ife” by the students and admirers, performed the product launch through its College of Health Sciences and ICT-Driven Knowledge Park, when it hosted a one-day symposium on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics in Clinical Practice, in the ACE Design Studio Hall recently.

The symposium with the theme: “Transforming Healthcare: AI-Driven Solutions for Nigeria’s Medical Future”, featured insightful sessions that examined AI’s potential in diagnosis, treatment, and healthcare delivery in the West African country.

Prof. Aderounmu and Prof. Bernice Adegbehingbe MD, with Prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire, Vice-Chancellor of OAU, serving as the Chief Host.

Speaking on the event, Aderounmu Adesola, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC, Academics) at OAU, affirmed event gathered academics, healthcare professionals, technology experts, students, and industry leaders to explore how AI and Robotics are transforming clinical practice in Nigeria and beyond.

Prof. Aderounmu in a statement posted on his verified social media account, stated: “Discussions ranged from introductory perspectives on AI for clinicians, key trends in local applications, and the clinical imperative for AI adoption to roundtable forums addressing opportunities, challenges, and ethical considerations.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC, Academics) and former President of the Nigeria Computer Society noted that distinguished speakers on the occasion included Prof. Philip O. Ogunbona, Ms. Tilila El Moujahid (Microsoft, UAE), Prof. Olusegun Alatise, Mr. Ejovi Aror, Mr. Ope Olugasa and Dr. Olaitan Olusegun.

Prof. Aderounmu restated that a key highlight of the symposium at Obafemi Awolowo University was the formal launch of the University’s OAK.io line of phones and smartwatches.

The University said the devices included the X55 smartphone that features a 6.5-inch display, dual-SIM support for flexible network coverage, and a capable octa-core processor running at 1.6 GHz enough power for smooth everyday use and AI applications.

In his closing remarks, Prof. Bamire, the Vice-Chancellor, commended the University’s authorities on the symposium for advancing OAU’s vision of “pioneering innovation and knowledge that addresses Africa’s unique developmental challenges.”
