Global Connectivity: Equinix invests $22m in first-in-West Africa ‘LG3 data centre’ in Lagos

Equinix Incorporated, world’s leading digital infrastructure company™, Monday, November 10, 2025, announced a plan to establish its latest high-performance data centre in Lagos, the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria.

The $22 million fresh investment in LG3 marks the first phase of an ambitious investment plan of about $100 million aimed at transforming Africa’s digital landscape over the next two years.

ConsumerConnect reports Equinix operates data centres in Nigeria and, like all telecoms companies, the firm operates under the industry regulatory framework of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Equinix entered the Nigerian market 2022 through the $320 million acquisition of MainOne, a leading West African connectivity and data centre services provider.

Since the acquisition over the past two years, the company has expanded its presence and operations in Nigeria, regarding Lagos as a strategic “connectivity hub” for the entire West African sub-region, according to report.

Scheduled to commence operations in the First Quarter (Q1) of 2026, Equinix disclosed the new-fangled data site in Lagos would deliver enhanced vital digital infrastructure to the West African country’s telecoms, and entire digital ecosystem by empowering local businesses to scale.

The company further assured that the new facility would attract global companies to Nigeria in this strategically positioned hub for global connectivity.

In a statement by APO Group, on behalf of Equinix Media Relations, made available to ConsumerConnect Monday, the digital infrastructure company said besides the new LG3 Data centre in Lagos, it would also facilitate the incorporation of Equinix Fabric into the metro to enable businesses to securely connect their physical and virtual infrastructure to cloud service providers, partners, and other companies to other Equinix locations all around the world.

Speaking on the new-fangled investment in global connectivity digital infrastructure, Wole Abu, Managing Director for West Africa at Equinix, stated: “LG3 marks a significant milestone in Equinix’s long-term commitment to bridging Africa’s digital divide.

‘Lagos at epicentre of Africa’s digital transformation’

Underscoring the need for its new investment in digital infrastructure, Equinix declared that Nigeria is the second-largest economy in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The statement further noted: “It is home to a vibrant and increasingly tech-savvy population.

“Lagos, in particular, is at the epicentre of Africa’s digital transformation, recognised as the only African city in the Global Top 100 Startup Ecosystems.

Also in his remarks on the opportunity for Equinix on the Africa continent, Aslıhan Güreşcier, Vice-President, EMEA Growth & Emerging Markets at Equinix, said: “Africa’s digital transformation is accelerating, driven by a young population, rising Internet access, and increasing demand for secure data infrastructure.

It is equally noted that since its entry into the African market 2022, Equinix has expanded its presence in key African markets, including, Nigeria, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire.

The company, in 2024, opened its first data centre, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

According to Equinix, the digital infrastructure significantly strengthens the company’s global presence on the continent, accelerating Africa’s digital transformation by delivering sustainable, carrier neutral infrastructure that reliably connects it with the rest of the global economy.

With a footprint spanning over 270 data centres worldwide, Equinix is continuing to bring its global expertise and infrastructure to the region, the statement noted.

This includes harnessing Nigeria’s strategic position as an “international hub for global subsea cable connections”, linking Africa with Europe, Asia, and beyond.
