NITDA marks National Cyber Security Awareness Month, urges healthy cyber hygiene practices

As the global community becomes increasingly digital, consumers’ daily life is now more than ever connected through phones, computers, and the Internet every day.

However, this increasing digital connection in cyberspace comes with growing risks, including hackers, scams, and cyberthreats waiting for just one careless click.

ConsumerConnect reports the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has said it is using the 2025 Cybersecurity Awareness Month to remind Nigerian digital consumers, that cybersafety begins with individual responsibility in the ecosystem.

NITDA disclosed the theme for this year’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month is: “Cyber Hygiene for a Safer Tomorrow”.

The Information Technology (IT) sector regulatory agency noted everyone has the power to protect selves and their communities by adopting simple but effective cyber hygiene practices.

According to NITDA, such effective cyber hygiene practices should include the following tips:

  1. Using strong and unique passwords for all online accounts
  2. Enabling two-factor authentication to add extra security layers
  3. Keeping devices and applications updated regularly
  4. Backing up important data frequently
  5. Avoiding suspicious links or attachments from unknown sources, and
  6. Thinking carefully before sharing personal or financial information online.

The agency also highlighted that the theme for this year, “Cyber Hygiene for a Safer Tomorrow,” emphasised that cyber hygiene is not only a personal responsibility but a collective effort.

It said when individuals protect themselves, they also safeguard their families, workplaces, and the broader digital community.

NITDA as well urged consumers: “As we continue to build a secure and digitally resilient Nigeria, NITDA calls on all citizens to stay alert, click wisely, and stay safe online.”
