For their acts of brigandage while venting their displeasure over the current socio-economic dislocations induced by the current fuel and Naira scarcity, the Nigeria Police authorities have nabbed about 30 suspects involved in the attacking banks and other private property Monday, February 19, 2023, in Sagamu, Ogun  State.

Report indicates normalcy may have been restored in the Sagamu area of the state, where violent protests rocked the town early Monday over scarcity of fuel and the new Naira notes.

ConsumerConnect had reported that certain commercial banks and private business premises were attacked and set ablaze, cars looted and burnt, as shops were forced to remain under lock and key during the protests.

Mr. Frank Mba, Ogun State Commissioner of Police,  who led his officers and soldiers to the scene, disclosed that 30 suspects had been arrested in connection with the unrest on Monday.

Residents claim the violence started around 5:30 a.m. while law-abiding citizens were still sleeping, report said.

It was gathered the most affected area of the town was Oba Erinwole Road, where the protesters attacked about seven branches of commercial banks, vandalised their Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and looted property, leaving the Sagamu neighbourhood as a shadow of itself in the process.

Likewise, hoodlums broke the wall of a bank’s branch in an attempt to gain access into the banking hall and the strong room, report noted.

However, it took the intervention of a combined team of the Police, led by the Commissioner of Police and men of the Nigerian Army to put the violent protests in check from escalating.

In the wake of the violent protests which disrupted the otherwise peaceful town, 30 suspects were reportedly arrested inside one of the affected banks in Sagamu.

Ogun State Police Commissioner Mba warned against violent protests, an action he said would compound the already fragile situation in Nigeria.

In spite of the relative normalcy restored in the area, officers and men of the Police Command have since been deployed to strategic locations in the area to ensure law and order prevails, according to report.
