Insecurity: Katsina Governor requests NCC to reactivate telecoms services in 10 LGAs

*The Katsina State Government of Nigeria has requested the Federal Government to restore telecommunications services in 10 of the 17 Local Government Areas as the  security situation returns to ‘near normalcy’ in the North-West state

As normalcy gradually returns to the areas, the Katsina State Government requested the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the West African country’s telecoms sector regulatory Commission, to reactivate telecommunications services in 10 of the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) affected by the existing shutdown.

Alhaji Abdu Labaran Malumfashi, Director-General of Media to Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State, disclosed this development in a statement issued Friday, December 9, 2021.

Recall the North-West state in Nigeria earlier, had requested the Federal Government through the NCC to shut down telecoms operations in the affected areas about four months ago because of mounting security challenges, including banditry, terrorism and kidnappings.

Malumfashi stated the 10 affected Local Government Areas in the state are Kurfi, Dutsinma, Matazu, Musawa, Malumfashi, Dandume, Bakori, Funtua, Kafur and Danja.

The Katsina State Government noted that other LGAs not affected by the planned restoration of the telecommunications services are Faskari, Sabuwa, Batsari, Safana, Kankara, Danmusa and Jibia.

According to Governor Masari’s media aide, the decision by the state government to suspend the ban in the 10 Local Government Areas was as a result of the return to near normalcy.

The statement further said that efforts had remained on the front burner at ensuring maximum return of peace in every part of the state.

Governor Masari August 31, 2021, had signed the Security Containment Order suspending telecommunications services in 17 out of 34 local government councils of the state.

The state government’s order also prohibited the use of some roads in the affected local government areas, as well as the transportation of firewood, sale of animals, motorcycles and closure of some markets.

It equally restricts the use of commercial motorcycles and tricycles from 10.00p.m. to 5.30a.m. throughout the state, among other notable measures.

Telecoms services remain suspended in seven LGAs in Katsina ─Masari

Meanwhile, Governor Masari has noted that the suspension of telecoms services would remain effective in seven out of the 17 Local Government Areas earlier affected in Katsina State.

According to Alhaji Abdu Labaran Malumfashi, the government’s order also prohibits the use of some roads in the affected areas and the transportation of firewood within the state.

He stated: “Sale of all categories of animals and the total closure of some major markets in the affected places as well as the sale of motorcycles in the affected markets.

“The order also had restricted the use of commercial motorcycles and tricycles from 10p.m to 5.30 a.m throughout the state, among others.

The state government explained that the decision to suspend the ban in the 10 affected LGAs is as a result of the return to near normalcy in the areas.
