#BeCyberAware: NCC sensitises telecoms consumers on scams, cybersecurity

*The Nigerian Communications Commission cautions consumers against jumping at free credit, data, gifts, and related offers, saying ‘if something seems too good to be true, it usually is’

As part of the country’s telecoms sector regulator’s consumer information and education series, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has activated its ‘NCC Cyber Alert’ initiative via the #BeCyberAware to protect consumers in the country.

ConsumerConnect reports the Commission has continued to alert telecoms consumers to be wary of their activities in cyberspace through sensitisation SMS messages via smartphones, and other mobile devices in recent times.

The Commission among other messages, urged consumers: “Do not respond to messages/calls asking for your Personal Identifiable Information: BVN, Card Info, NIN, OTP, PIN, Login Info.

“Do not carry out financial transactions or any activity you consider sensitive on public Wi-Fi.”

According to NCC, consumers’ data can be easily stolen in the process, for lack of vigilance.

It further advised consumers of telecoms products and services to “not click on links offering free credit, data, gifts, lottery wins, etc.”

If something seems too good to be true, it usually is, said the regulator.

The NCC added: “Do not respond to any call/message that says you get a bonus after making a number of financial transactions. It is a SCAM.”
