Tinubu mourns late Amb. Joy Ogwu, ‘a skilled diplomat and scholar’

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed “profound sadness” over the death of Nigerian Ambassador (Prof.) Joy Uche Angela Ogwu, who passed away at 79.

Ambassador Ogwu was former Minister for Foreign Affairs and erstwhile Ambassador/Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations (UN) in New York, United States (US).

Late Ambassador Ogwu represented the West African country at the UN from May 2008 to May 2017.

Describing her as a skilled diplomat and scholar, President recalled how the deceased served as the Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA).

While at NIIA, Amb. Ogwu she made invaluable contributions to developing Nigeria’s foreign policy and international relations scholarship.

With inspiring dedication and skill, the Nigerian Government states late Ogwu presided over the UN Security Council twice, first July 2010 and again, October 2011.

Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, stated President Tinubu also extolled the late Ambassador for projecting Nigeria’s voice with clarity and purpose and working tirelessly for global peace, disarmament, international security, and the advancement of women’s rights.

The President as well extended his heartfelt condolences to Ambassador Ogwu’s five children, grandchildren, sisters and brothers, the entire Ogwu family, and the diplomatic and academic community, mourning the passing of the distinguished diplomat.

Tinubu declared: ”Nigeria has lost a trailblazer who rose to the highest level of her vocation through excellence and hard work.”

The President prayed for the repose of her soul and for divine comfort for all who mourn the diplomat, the statement added.
