Sequel to the recent approval of reports from the Examination Misconduct Committee on alleged cases of examination malpractice during the December 2025 Bar Final Examination, the Council of Legal Education (CLE) has suspended five Law students from sitting the Bar Final Examination for 10 years.
The Council took the decision at its Third-Quarter (Q3) hybrid meeting held August 13, 2026, at the Nigerian Law School Headquarters, at Bwari, Abuja, FCT.
Aderonke Osho, Secretary to CLE and Director of Administration, in a statement, disclosed the meeting had considered and approved reports of the Examination Misconduct Committee on alleged cases of examination irregularity during the last Bar Final Examination.
What about Bar Final Examination?
ConsumerConnect reports the Bar Final Examination is the qualifying examination conducted by the Nigerian Law School for Law graduates, who have completed the “prescribed vocational training programme” at the institution.
The Examination is typically held annually, and it is required for candidates seeking to qualify for enrollment as legal practitioners in Nigeria.
CLE bars 5 students from sitting Bar Final Examination for 10 years
Thr Council stated: “Following consideration of the reports, the Council approved the disqualification of five (5) candidates found guilty of examination misconduct, and barred them from sitting the Bar Final Examination for a period of ten (10) years.”
Besides, the Council approved sanctions against two other students found culpable of acts of indiscipline-related misconduct.
The statement, however, did not reveal the identities of the affected students nor their Universities before ebrilling for the Nigerian Law School.
The Secretary to CLE and Director of Administration said the CLE meeting as well considered policies, regulatory, academic and administrative matters relating to legal education and the administration of the law school in the country.
The Council, April 2026, had indicated that about 1,067 candidates failed the 2025 Bar Final Examination out of the total of 7,602 candidates who sat the examination in Nigeria.
The Bar Final Examination results showed that 212 candidates earned First-Class Honours, while 1,216 obtained Second Class Upper.
According to CLE, 2,961 candidates graduated with Second Class Lower, 1,622 passed, and 314 recorded conditional passes.
The Council also revealed that a total of 210 candidates were absent, while it put the overall pass rate at 79.1 percent, representing a decline from the previous year.
983 Candidates fail 2026 Bar Final resit examination, by CLE
In a related development, the Council of Legal Education has said a total of 983 candidates failed the 2026 Bar Final (Resit), representing 50.3 percent of the 1,955 candidates who sat for examination.
The Council noted only 883 candidates passed the examination held in May 2026.
It also reported an overall pass rate of 45.3 percent, while 54.7 percent of the candidates did not attain the prescribed Pass mark.
