Following successful deliberations on key issues that would shape Africa’s common position ahead of a conference later this year, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has congratulated Nigeria and industry stakeholders.
ConsumerConnect reports Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of NCC, noted this in recent post-event remarks on the remarkable outing during the week-long 26th African Telecommunications Union Conference of Plenipotentiaries (ATU CPL ’26) held July 2026, in Abuja, FCT.

Maida applauded the West African country for successful hosting of the ATU CPL ’26, stating the transnational telecoms conference attracted representatives from across the ATU member-states.
He also appreciated the how delegates from other member-states deliberated on the key issues that would determine Africa’s common position ahead of the forthcoming International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference, slated for November this year.
ATU CPL 2026 ignites ‘more connected digital future’ for Africa, says NCC
Earlier, the Nigerian Commission, in its assessment of the just concluded ATU CPL 2026, had said the transnational gathering marked “a significant milestone”, as African countries converged on Abuja with a shared vision to strengthen regional collaboration, and speak with one united voice ahead of ITU PP-26 later this year.
The telecoms regulator stated: “The Conference reaffirmed Africa’s collective commitment to advancing inclusive digital transformation, fostering innovation, and shaping a stronger, more connected digital future for the continent. One Africa. One Voice. One Digital Future.”
Tijani’s leadership instrumental in successful hosting, says Maida
The EVC/CEO of the telecoms sector regulatory Commission, in his verified social media account, stated: “I also congratulate the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, Nigeria), Dr. Bosun Tijani, whose leadership was instrumental in the successful hosting of this conference.
“His commitment, alongside the efforts of the Ministry and other stakeholders, ensured that Nigeria provided an excellent platform for this important continental engagement.”
Maida also noted that representatives of member-states deliberated on key issues for over seven productive days in Nigeria.
He said: “We exchanged ideas, debated diverse perspectives, built consensus, and reaffirmed our shared commitment to advancing Africa’s digital future through stronger regional cooperation.
Maida recalled that aside from the formal sessions during the conference, he personally had the privilege of engaging with his colleagues and counterparts from across the African continent.
“Those conversations provided valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges we face as regulators, while reinforcing the importance of collaboration in addressing our shared priorities.
“As we look ahead to the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, Nigeria remains committed to being a strong, constructive and reliable voice for Africa on the global stage.
“We also look forward with confidence to our bid for re-election to the ITU Council, reaffirming our commitment to advancing the continent’s collective interests within the global telecommunications community,” stated the Executive Vice-Chairman of NCC.
Extending his warm appreciation to key telecoms industry’s stakeholders, he equally congratulated Engr. Kezias Kazuba Mwale of Zambia on his election as Secretary-General of the African Telecommunications Union for the 2027–2031 term.
Maida further wrote: “I look forward to working with him to deepen regional cooperation and advance the growth and development of telecommunications across our continent.
“And to my friend, Mr. John Omo, the outgoing Secretary-General of the African Telecommunications Union, thank you for your dedicated service and leadership over the past eight years.”
The NCC Chief Executive added: “It has been a privilege working with you, and I wish you every success in the next chapter of your journey.”
