Tinubu denies ownership of Oriental Hotel, other properties ‘linked’ to him

Sequel to recent speculations that he owns certain choice properties in the Lekki axis of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress for 2023 Presidential Election, has denied ownership of such properties linked to him in the ‘Centre of Excellence’.

ConsumerConnect learnt such select properties linked to Asiwaju Tinubu, a former Governor of Lagos State, located include Oriental Hotel, at Lekki, and Civic Centre, on Victoria Island, in Lagos.

Tinubu is facing several questions about his source of wealth and his state of health ahead of the commencement of campaign slated for  September 28, 2022, in line with INEC timetable and schedule of activities.

Earlier in a documentary on his achievements as Lagos State Governor, Tinubu was quoted to stated that he only provided the environment for investors to invest in the Lekki Corridor.

Likewise, in the excerpt Jubril Gawat, a media aide to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, posted on Twitter, the estwhile Lagos Governor said the entire Lekki Corridor was then, a refuse dump that took months to clear.

In regard to his alleged ownership of Oriental Hotel, located along the popular Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, on Victoria Island, there are also speculations, that the Presidential Candidate of the ruling party owns the edifice, according to report.

In the aftermath of the  shooting incident at the Lekki Tollgate, in 2020, the hotel, reportedly, was targeted by hoodlums on the ground that the asset belongs to him.

It was gathered that the event prompted the Western Metal Product Company, the owners of the facilities, to issue a statement about ownership of the said hotel.

In clarifying the issue of ownership, Taiwo Ali, Executive Director of WEMCO, disclosed that the WEMCO Group owns 99 percent of the shares of the hotels.

In the course of the violence that occurred in the aftermath of the 2020 EndSARS protest, some media houses linked to Tinubu were torched.

The media are The Nation Newspaper, Television Continental and Max Radio.

Speaking in the documentary, Asiwaju Tinubu was Governor of Lagos State between 1999 and 2007, restated that he does not own the Oriental Hotel and other properties linked to him.

However, he noted that his administration while serving as Governor invested resources to clear the dumps at the place where the hotel and the Civic Centre are located in Lagos.

Tinubu also said: “I have converted a liability confronting Lagos to an asset of great value.

“Along Ozumba Mbadiwe, we used to pick dead bodies.

“People have forgotten truck pushers in those areas. You have the dirties coastline along Ozumba Mbadiwe all through Lekki corridor.”

He further noted: “I brought private investors, hospitality— they created the boat club, the Civic Centre that is of great value to many people today—that was a refuse dump.

“Nobody would easily remember that Oriental Hotel was a refuse dump— a mile of refuse along that corridor.”

The Presidential Candidate as well stated that “it took several months of escalating and a great investment for those investors to take the risk.

“Majority of those assets they claim are mine are not mine.

“I created an economic and recovery path for Lagos. There is no state that can brag of the exponential development that is going on in the Lekki Corridor.”
