Dr. Idris Salako, Lagos State Honourable Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, has resigned from office.

Salako’s resignation came barely 24 hours after a seven-storey building caved in, killing at least five persons with fears that more bodies will be recovered from the site, on Victoria Island, Lagos.

ConsumerConnect reports Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, Honourable Commissioner for Information and Strategy, confirmed this development in a statement issued Monday, September 5, 2022, in Lagos.

Omotoso said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State accepted Dr. Salako’s resignation.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy also explained that Governor Sanwo-Olu’s  acceptance of Dr. Salako’s resignation is a prelude to the restructuring of the Ministry and its associated agencies.

Omotoso further noted: “The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has accepted the resignation of the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako.”

The statement said that the governor thanked the commissioner for “his services to the State and wishes him success in his future endeavours.”

The governor as well  warned all players in the building and construction industry in the state to respect the law or face the consequences of any indiscretion, no matter who the perpetrators are.

It is recalled that the building situated at Oba Idowu, Oniru Street, Victoria Island, in Lagos, collapsed Sunday, September 4.

Although the immediate cause of the collapse is still sketchy, emergency workers and security operatives have already moved to the site to rescue the trapped victims, report said.

The incident reportedly moved the Lagos State Government to order the arrest of the developer and other building professionals working on the collapsed seven-storey building.

In recent times, Lagos has experienced a series of building collapses, despite efforts by the state government to curb the menace.
