Emphasising that Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs)-generated National Identity Numbers (NINs) would not work on its newly inaugurated mobile application, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has said that Subscriber Identity Modules (SIMs) cards would not be linked with NINs generated through BVNs.

The Commission, which stated this in tweets via its verified official Twitter account, Tuesday, January 12, 2021, noted that Nigerians with BVN-generated NINs should visit NIMC offices to validate their NINs.

The BVN-generated NINs would not work on the newly inaugurated mobile app, said NIMC.

It further said: “You must complete your NIN registration even if your BVN has generated a NIN.

“If your NIN was generated due to the BVN record harmonisation with the National Identity Database, you will not have access to the NIMC mobile app and your NIN-SIM integration will be invalid.

“Kindly visit an enrollment centre to complete your NIN registration.”

Meanwhile, several thousands of Nigerians have been thronging NIMC offices nationwide to register and get their NINs.

It is recalled that the Federal Government December 15, 2020, had declared that after December 30, 2020, all SIMs that were not registered with valid NINs on the network of telecommunications companies shall be blocked.

However, the government extended the December 30, 2020, deadline after widespread opposition against the earlier announcement, and later gave three weeks’ extension for subscribers with NIN from December 30, 2020 to January 19, 2021.

Six-week extension was also given to subscribers without NINs from December 30, 2020 to February 9, 2021.
