COVID-19: Mutation-beating vaccine can be made in ‘6 weeks’: BioNTech

*If needed, we can directly start to engineer a vaccine which completely mimics this new mutation, to be able to provide a new vaccine technically within six weeks, says Ugur Sahin, Co-founder of BioNTech

Following the latest reports that the second wave of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is hitting hard on consumers in certain economies, Uğur Şahin, Co-founder of BioNTech, has said that it is “highly likely” that its vaccine against the Coronavirus works against the mutated strain detected in Britain.

However, the BioNTech chief Tuesday, December 22, 2020, stated that the company could also adapt the vaccine if necessary in six weeks, AFP report said.

ConsumerConnect reported Monday that sequel to the outbreak of the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic and its accompanying new strain in Britain, UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock warned that the new strain of the coronavirus is “out of control”.

He suggested parts of England would be stuck in the new, highest tier of restrictions until a vaccine is rolled out.

Incidentally, the measures to control the fast-spreading new variant of the virus forbid household mixing in those areas and restrict socialising.

Şahin also said: “Scientifically, it is highly likely that the immune response by this vaccine also can deal with the new virus variant.”

According to him, if needed, “in principle the beauty of the messenger technology is that we can directly start to engineer a vaccine which completely mimics this new mutation — we could be able to provide a new vaccine technically within six weeks.”
