Against the backdrop of the recent #EndSARS protests and their attendant socio-economic disruptions and wanton destruction of public and private assets in the country, Mr. Mohammed Adamu, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has urged officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to not shy away from performing their constitutional responsibilities in order not to put the society in trouble.

It was gathered the IGP handed down the directive Thursday, November 26 during his official visit to the Oyo State Police Command, Ibadan, as well the Ogun State Police Command, Abeokuta, in the wake of the #EndSARS countrywide demonstrations where some officers were killed and Police stations burnt.

Adamu also encouraged the officers not to be demoralised by the attacks.

Neglecting their constitutional duty of protecting lives and property would let the criminals have a free day in perpetrating their heinous crime acts, said the IGP.

The IGP said: “No amount of insult, no amount of attacks should prevent you from performing your constitutional duty.

“We encourage you to go out and perform your duty the way you have been trained.

“You must follow the protocol and be civil in doing it. At the point of doing your job, be encouraged and if anything happens in the course of doing it, we will stand behind you but never shy away.”

According to the Police Chief, the fire-arms the officers were licensed to carry were not for decoration but to protect lives and property of Nigerians.

“They should be used when necessary. When your life is in danger, and there is no other means of protecting yourself, you can use them,” declared Adamu.

He assured the officers that President Muhammadu Buhari and Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) are behind them, and they should not be demoralised and nobody would trample upon their rights.

Meanwhile, the IGP has disclosed that President Buhari had approved the upgrading of salaries of officers, and the Force had made the promotion of officers a commitment, saying those due for promotion would be promoted.
