For obvious inadequacies in properly equipping the country’s all-important healthcare amid the ravaging Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has decried the inability of the Nigerian Government also to adequately kit health workers across the country.

Comrade Ayuba Wabba, mni, President of NLC, stated this in his address at a media briefing Thursday, October 29, in Abuja, FCT, to commemorate Global Day of Action on Care 2020.

Wabba, who spoke on theme, “Invest in Quality Care Now!” disclosed that he believes the inadequacies of the government come even at a time when the world is grappling with the novel Coronavirus pandemic.

He said: “COVID-19 has fully exposed several countries, including Nigeria as not having invested enough in our healthcare institutions, putting everyone, both rich and poor at high risks.”

The theme of the year’s Global Day of Action on Care, according to him, was to drum up demands for heavy investments in the sector by the government and big businesses, if Nigeria must keep a healthy society and productive human resource base.

The health sector has been neglected for too long, he declared, adding that workers have also been subjected to unfair treatment.

Wabba further stated the health workers do not have the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to work with, especially before the outbreak of COVID-19.

“Apart from the open fact that our healthcare sector has been neglected for too long, health care workers have been subjected to unfair treatment for too long,” he stated.

He insisted that the government waited for the pandemic before it woke up to the reality of the decadence in the healthcare sector.

The NLC Chief contended that with the massive resources at the government’s disposal, the country can afford to build and effectively equip some of the best hospitals in the world, with global best practices and personnel.

He noted that successive administrations in Nigeria have failed to take healthcare as a top priority beyond mere policy statements.

Wabba, therefore, urged the government at all levels to demonstrate more than keen attention to the health sector.

The current pandemic has shown how important healthcare is to all sectors of the economy and citizens of any country in the world.
