The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has disclosed that the full economic benefits of the much talked about fifth-generation (5G) technology will be realised across the globe by 2035, and will support a wide range of industries and potentially enable about $13.2 trillion worth of goods and services.

ConsumerConnect reports Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, Executive Vice-Chairman (EVC) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NCC, stated this during a training workshop for journalists Tuesday, October 27, in Abuja, FCT.

Prof. Danbatta said: “5G’s full economic effect will likely be realised across the globe by 2035, supporting a wide range of industries and potentially enabling up to $13.2 trillion worth of goods and services.

“This impact will be much greater than the current 4G network.”

The NCC Executive Vice-Chairman/CEO, represented by Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, Director of Public Affairs, said 5G would provide increased speed, bandwidth, and also provide deeper coverage to reach people in rural or challenging locations, when fully deployed in the telecom ecosystem.

According to him, the fifth generation network would provide strong security for the various sectors of government and private organisations.

“Due to its sheer scale and scope, the ITU predicts 5G will accelerate the achievements of all the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from affordable and clean energy to zero hunger,” stated Danbatta.

He further stated that the misinformation/misrepresentation of 5G technology has the potential of derailing the launch/implementation of this new technology in the country.

He observed that several Nigerians, including citizens even in more civilised countries, have held the notion that the introduction of 5G technology was the reason behind the spread of the novel COVID-19 pandemic.

The NCC Chief Executive added: “This misconception was even made worse because those saddled with the responsibility of informing, educating and enlightening the average Nigerian telecom consumers were also bereft of the knowledge of this new technology and hitched a ride on the bandwagon of doubters.”
