Ogun shuts Avalon industrial estate over several environmental infractions

The Ogun State Government (OGSG) has sealed off Avalon Industrial Estate, at Moloko – Asipa along the Abeokuta – Sagamu Expressway for various environmental infractions.

The Statement Government restated its determination to keep the state clean of all forms of wastes especially hazardous industrial wastes.

It also noted that Avalon Industrial Estate’s several environmental infractions are in violation of Sections of the 2020 Ogun State Waste Management Authority Law.

In ordering the closure of the Industrial Estate, which houses several industries, such as Cherry Motors, May Mall, Hongfu Building Materials Industry, Oolala Global Trading Company, Buyang Industry Limited, Leku Industry and Abec Kuka Foams, Hon. Farook Akintunde, Special Adviser to the Governor on Waste Management, who doubles as the Managing Director of Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), said the companies in the Industrial Estate were found guilty of dumping wastes.

Hon. Akintunde stated these include hazardous ones in their immediate environment and community contrary to Section 34(1) of Ogun State Waste Management Law 2020 as well as engaging the services of unauthorised waste collectors to evacuate their waste in contravention of Section 17 of the same law.

The governor’s aide also affirmed that “they were also found culpable of dumping waste in illegal dumpsites as well as preventing government-licenced waste collectors to perform their duties in the Estate since 2023 in disobedience to OGWAMA Law.”

Akintunde said: “Despite all these infractions, we gave the Estate the opportunity to defend themselves of these allegations and even scheduled a facility tour to the Estate to resolve all the issues, but they refused and even stopped government officials from doing the facility tour thereby preventing them from doing their lawful duties.

“As government agency, we will not fold our hands and watch the Avalon Industrial Estate to willingly flout government laws with reckless abandon as well as denying government officials from performing their lawful duties under any guise.”

Meanwhile, the Managing Director of Ogun State Waste Management Authority, has said the Avalon Estate will remain shut until the Management corrects all the infractions, as well as show commitment in writing to submit themselves to all the laws governing to waste management in the “Gateway State”.
