NCC, industry stakeholders converge on Lagos for telecoms policy review

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said it is hosting a two-day policy review workshop to update the National Telecommunications Policy (NTP), 2000.

ConsumerConnect reports the NCC disclosed the event would hold May 20–21, 2026, at Marriott Hotel, in Ikeja, Lagos State.

The telecoms sector regulatory Commission, on behalf of Dr, Bosun Tijani, Honourable Minister for Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (FMCIDE), said the event would attract industry leaders to align with the West African country’s regulatory framework.

It also noted the stakeholders’ engagement is expected to consider emerging technologies and the outlined objectives of the emerging Nigeria Digital Economy.

Among other focus areas of the two-day event, the workshop discussions would examine updating the 25-year-old telecommunications policy to address modern industry demands.

Among other key areas of attention at the forum is Broadband infrastructure and Quality of Service (QoS).

This relates to the industry’s need to expand Internet penetration and improve the overall Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) for telecoms consumers.

Infrastructure Protection is also expected to receive attention in line with the Federal Government’s designation of telecoms infrastructure as part of the Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) that should be accorded high priority protection in the economy.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, June 2024, has signed an Executive Order (EO) adding digital assets as CNII in the ecosystem.

The Commission further noted that the workshop would strengthen policies around Critical National Information Infrastructure.

The stakeholders as well would examine Spectrum Management and Emerging Technology, which involves incorporating regulations for 5G technology, net neutrality, and modern spectrum usage.

The much-needed digital inclusion that will enhance access and minimise the digital divide across underserved areas in Nigeria, stated the NCC.

Participation in the two-day stakeholder engagement is critical for shaping the forthcoming National Telecommunications Policy (NTP 2026).

It was also gathered that while the workshop is strictly by invitation, invited participants are expected to confirm their participation via the NCC RSVP Microsoft Form.
