Sequel to recent consumer complaints and subsequent investigation, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned Nigerians against the circulation of unregistered and suspected counterfeit Colgate toothpaste in markets.

ConsumerConnect reports NAFDAC said this in a public alert issued Sunday, April 19, 2026, via its verified X handle.

The health sector regulatory agency disclosed its Post-Marketing Surveillance Directorate had received a complaint about the distribution of the substandard products in Kaduna State, Northern Nigeria.

The agency also noted its officials visited the outlet where the items were being sold and discovered two suspected counterfeit products branded as “Coglaet ActivGel 100g” and “Coglaet Herbal 100g”.

NAFDAC further explained: “The shop owner informed the team that the products were purchased from a door-to-door sales representative; however, no proof of purchase was provided.

“These products have not met the required regulatory standards for registration and quality assurance, thereby posing a potential risk to public health and safety.”

The health industry regulator, however, said the items had been removed from circulation, while investigations were ongoing to identify and track distributors.

According to the agency, the affected products include “Coglaet Crema Dental Herbal 100g” and “Coglaet ActivGel 100g”, both with neither batch numbers nor NAFDAC registration numbers.

The products are labelled as being manufactured by Guangzhou YECAI Oral Cleaning Products Co., Ltd, located in Baiyun District, Guangzhou, China, with manufacturing dates August 2025, and expiry dates August 2029 respectively.

The agency said all its Zonal Directors and State Coordinators had since been directed to intensify surveillance and mop up the counterfeit products wherever they are found in the markets.

NAFDAC also urged product distributors, retailers and consumers to exercise caution and verify the authenticity and physical condition of products before purchase or use.

It equally advises consumers to report suspected cases of substandard or counterfeit products to the nearest NAFDAC office, call 0800-162-3322, or send an e-mail to: sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.

The health sector regulator as well encouraged healthcare professionals and patients to report any adverse effects linked to the toothpaste products through its official reporting platforms, including its Web site and the Med-Safety mobile application.
