Nigeria, Google design AI, cloud frameworks to tackle real-life national challenges

In continuation of his team’s stakeholder engagement with international stakeholders, Dr. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, CCIE, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), has hosted Mr. Charles Murito, Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy for Sub-Saharan Africa of Google, one of the global tech giants.

NITDA discloses it hosted the visiting team at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, where their discussion centered on cloud adoption and forward-looking Artificial Intelligence (AI) frameworks.

ConsumerConnect reports the overarching objective of the stakeholder engagement with NITDA is aimed at addressing real-world national challenges, as well as the ongoing National Sovereign Cloud Initiative (NSCI), led by NITDA.

The agency also stated that during the meeting, Inuwa reaffirmed NITDA’s commitment to developing regulatory instruments through active stakeholder engagement.

It further emphasised that the agency prioritises practical, effective solutions over theoretical approaches to challenges.

Google Director speaks on Cloud First Guidelines

In his remarks during the visit to NITDA, Murito, Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy for Sub-Saharan Africa of Google, appreciated such inclusive approach.

He also observed significant progress in the Cloud First Guidelines, which have evolved into a balanced roadmap, following extensive consultations and feedback on issues like data classification.

Likewise, Dr. Aminu Lawal, Special Assistant (SA) to the Director-General on Policy at NITDA, provided an update on the NSCI.

The agency said Dr. Lawal highlighted the extensive technical work and feedback incorporated from industry and government stakeholders.

According to him, the Guideline is now nearing finalisation, and is expected to drive secure cloud adoption, enhance data resilience, and boost national confidence in digital infrastructure.

Murito further emphasised the potential human impact of technology

The Google Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy for Sub-Saharan Africa of Google, citing examples, such as optimising teacher-student ratios and improving healthcare access in the Nigerian economy.
