The United Kingdom (UK) Immigration authorities have published the country’s new Dependent Visa Changes 2026.It is noted that the new visa rules would apply to dependents this year.

These rules focus on maintaining a minimum £29,000 requirement for family visas, with stricter English language (B2 level) requirements for partners, which were said to start on January 8, 2026, report said.

Other requirements involve financial and accommodation requirements, English language standard, mandatory ETA scheme, skilled workers’ dependents, and settlement rule changes.

The UK Immigration also noted that skilled workers in specific roles, especially in healthcare, have had their dependent rights restricted, while new “no permission, no travel” ETA rules took effect February 26, 2026.

In regard to major UK Dependent Visa Changes, especially financial and accommodation requirements for this year, financial requirements are meant to ensure “dependents don’t rely on public funds.”

Besides, visa applicants have to show that they have enough money through income, savings, or pensions.

The rule also indicated that aside from personal maintenance funds like £285 for a partner, the main applicant usually needs to prove they can support everyone financially.

Savings must be held for 28 days to be accessible and usually exceed £16,000, sometimes combined with other income.

As for accommodation, it must be adequate, not overcrowded, and exclusively for the family.

However, this must be proven with official documents.

On English language standardFrom April 2026, new applicants for dependent visas might need to prove their English proficiency at the B2 level.

This also would apply to adult partners and would be assessed during the visa application process.

However, this rule has not yet been officially confirmed or added to the immigration rules, report noted.

Mandatory ETA scheme

The UK is introducing the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to create a faster and more secure digital border system.

Visitors who do not need a visa for short stays (up to six months) must get an ETA before travelling unless exempt.

It is a digital travel permission, not a visa, and does not guarantee entry.

It was learnt the British and Irish citizens do not need one. An ETA costs £16 (might increase to £20 soon) and allows multiple visits over two years or until the passport expires.

Skilled workers dependents

Your partner and your children can apply separately to join or stay with you in the UK as dependents.

Their visas usually end when yours ends. Eligible dependents include your spouse or partner, children under 18, and children over 18 already in the UK as dependents.

You must prove your relationship and meet financial requirements: £285 for a partner, £315 for one child, and £200 for each additional child.

Settlement rule changes

In November 2025, the UK government proposed major changes to settlement Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) rules. The standard waiting time could double from five to ten years.

Applicants may need higher English (B2 level) and at least three years of National Insurance Contributions.

Lower-skilled workers could wait up to 15 years, and refugees up to 20.

High earners may qualify faster, but many migrants already in the UK would be affected if the proposal is approved.
