2027: Electoral body restates commitment to transparency in ‘transmission of election results’ in Nigeria

Against the background of the renewed public interest in the body’s mode of transmission of election results, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed that the transmission of election results in the 2027 General Elections will be conducted “strictly in accordance with the Constitution, the Electoral Act, 2022 and the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines.

ConsumerConnect reports Prof. Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, Chairman of INEC, clarified the Commission’s position on the burning national issue while responding to questions from reporters a press conference Friday, February 13, 2026, in Abuja, FCT.

Amupitan noted this, following the official release of the Notice of Elections and Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Elections.

As regards recent concerns about electronic transmission of election results, Chairman of INEC said the Commission remains committed to transparency in result management, and would continue to deploy technology as provided by law.

He also explained that the process of election result transmission is clearly defined within the existing legal framework.

Amupitan asserted that the Commission would operate within those extant parameters.

According to him, the upload of polling unit results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) will continue as part of the Commission’s transparency measures, enabling stakeholders and the public to view results in real time as they are uploaded from the polling units.

This initiative, he noted, has significantly enhanced public confidence, and would remain an important component of the 2027 electoral process.

The Chairman further explained that the Commission’s technological systems are designed with multiple safeguards to ensure the integrity, authenticity and security of results.

He stated that INEC has continued to review and strengthen its operational procedures to address technical challenges experienced in previous elections to ensure improved performance and reliability.

Amupitan emphasised that as technology enhances transparency, the collation and declaration of results would continue to follow the procedure prescribed by law.

He further reaffirmed the Commission’s actions would be guided solely by statutory provisions and judicial pronouncements where applicable.

The Chairman, however, dismissed some insinuations suggesting uncertainty in INEC’s position on transmission.

He rather maintained that the Commission has been consistent in its adherence to the existing law.

Amupitan, therefore, reassured Nigerians that there would be no deviation from established legal and procedural standards in this regard.

He equally reminded stakeholders of INEC’s broader preparations, ranging from voter register clean-up and stakeholder engagement to security coordination, are being carefully aligned to support a credible and seamless electoral process.

The Chairman of INEC as well urged political parties, candidates, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), and the media to continue to engage constructively with the Commission and to familiarise themselves with the approved procedures for accreditation, voting, collation and result management.

In regard to independence and professionalism, Prof. Amupitan restated that INEC is fully prepared to conduct elections that are transparent, credible and reflective of the sovereign will of the people come 2027.
