Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, Nigeria’s Honourable Minister for Defence, Monday, December 1, 2025, resigned his appointment with immediate effect.

Abubakar, who communicated his decision in a letter dated December 1, and sent to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said he was quitting the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on health grounds.

Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who disclosed this development in a terse statement night Monday, in Abuja, FCT, said President Tinubu had since accepted the outgoing Defence Minister’s resignation.

The statement noted President Tinubu also thanked Abubakar for his services to the Nigeria.

Onanuga stated: “President Tinubu will likely inform the Senate of Badaru’s successor later this week.”

Badaru Abubakar, 63, was a two-term governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023.

Tinubu appointed him as a Minister August 21, 2023.

His resignation comes amid President Tinubu’s declaration of a national security emergency, with plans to elaborate on its scope in due course, the statement added.
