The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has highlighted how emerging technologies or digital tools can be deployed to reshape narratives and crisis response for stronger national systems in Nigeria.

ConsumerConnect reports Dr. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, CCIE, Director-General of NITDA, stated this while presenting his keynote address at the recent National Symposium on Digital Innovation in Crisis Communication, held at the National Defence College, (NDC), in Abuja, FCT.

Inuwa particularly focused on the urgent realities of today’s information space as applicable the West African country’s security, socio-economic, and geopolitical environments.

The Director-General of the agency also outlined how emerging digital tools are reshaping crisis response and why stronger national systems are now essential.

The Information Technology sector regulatory agency as well disclosed Inuwa explained that research consistently showed fake news spreading almost “six times faster than verified information”, a trend which he noted has already caused major economic disruptions in the country.

Buttressing his submissions on the burning national issue, the NITDA Chief Executive further cited recent incidents where misleading posts in the digital space triggered significant losses within minutes, reinforcing the need for rapid verification and coordinated intervention.

Inuwa highlighted progress that the agency has made through ongoing collaborations with global digital platforms.

The Director-General disclosed that 28 million fraudulent social media accounts have been removed from the country’s cyberspace, along with thousands of harmful posts, reflecting improvements in monitoring and content moderation.

He further emphasised the strategic importance of building stronger local review frameworks, improving real-time detection of harmful content, and implementing safeguards that protect consumers’ privacy while ensuring truth and public safety remain at the centre of Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
