In the Corps’ efforts at ensuring free vehicular traffic while improving the safety of road users, Dr. Kayode Olagunju, mni, Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) and new Zonal Commanding Officer (ZCO) of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Zone 4, comprising Plateau, Benue and Nasarawa States of Nigeria, has vowed to prosecute erring motorists in the Zone.

DRC Terry N. Hoomlong, Deputy Route Commander and Acting Zonal Public Education Officer/Protocol Officer of FRSC, in a statement made available to ConsumerConnect disclosed this Thursday, July 23, 2020.

Dr. Olagunju issued this warning in regard to the Mobile Courts the FRSC organised between June 26 and July 21, 2020, which has convicted 359 traffic offenders in Plateau and Nasarawa States.

The Assistant Corps Marshal and Zone 4 ZCO said that the most prevalent offences motorists and motorcyclists committed during the period included overloading, speed limit violation, tyre violation, driving and vehicle licence violations.

Other traffic abuses are seat belt, windscreen and motorcycle helmet violations.

According to FRSC ACM, a total of 408 traffic offenders were arrested by the FRSC Operatives and arraigned before eight (8) Magistrate Courts in the two states, while 50 of the 408 arraigned were discharged and acquitted.

The convicts were given between two and six months’ jail terms, but were given the options of fines ranging from two to N10,000.

In RS4.1 Plateau, a total of 117 traffic offenders were convicted with 121 offences by Hon. Godswill Longs, the Presiding Magistrate.

Likewise in RS4.3 Nasarawa, Magistrates Abimbola Buzi, Joy Farouk, Victoria Isiaku, Abundaga Habila and Gwahimba Vincent convicted a total of 242 traffic offenders, said the statement.

Olagunju cautioned motorists to be careful, maintain their vehicles, and imbibe good driving culture at all times especially now that it is raining heavily in the area.

He urged them to ensure that their tyres and wipers are in good condition while they avoid overloading their vehicles while on the roads.

Motorists are to fasten their seat belts always while passengers are urged to always caution their drivers whenever they attempt to break traffic rules and regulations, he stated.

Earlier while addressing the staff of the Corps on assumption of duty as the Zonal Commanding Officer in Zone 4, he warned the personnel to shun extortion as he has in place a monitoring mechanism to fish out the corrupt ones and get them punished in line with the extant rules.

Olagunju, therefore, advised all staff to be dedicated to their duties, be disciplined, shun rumour mongering and be civil to the members of the public while discharging their duties.

He stressed that the FRSC staff are expected to abide by COVID-19 Protocols, such as regular washing of hands with running water and soap and the use of sanitisers, use of nose masks and physical distancing.

Hard working staff and Commands would be rewarded while those violating the Operational Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures would be sanctioned accordingly, he said.

ACM Olagunju enjoined all the Commanding Officers in the Zone to be creative in evolving strategies and initiatives to reduce the rate of road traffic crashes and fatalities in the zone.
