The Police Command in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has discredited certain reports evening Sunday, November 16, 2025, that Lt. Ahmed M. Yerima, a Nigerian Navy Officer, “escaped” an assassination attempt in Abuja.

Reacting to the reports, the FCT Police Command described the assassination attempt claims on Lt. Yerima as false and unverified.

Some news outlets, and social media posts had circulated that Yerima was trailed by unidentified men dressed in black, travelling in two unmarked Hilux vans without number plates, in Abuja.

The said reports had claimed that the pursuit began around 6:30 p.m. at the NIPCO filling station along the Kubwa Expressway and continued to Gado Nasco Way in the FCT.

Yerima reportedly evaded the assailants through a “strategic manoeuvre” during a high-speed chase.

It is noted that the reports ignited speculation linking claims of assassination attempt to the Naval Officer’s recent confrontation with Barr. Nyesom Wike, Honourable Minister for the FCT, over a disputed land allocation without documentation, in Abuja.

SP Josephine Adeh, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, in a statement issued late Sunday, described the claim as entirely false, noting that no such incident was reported or recorded anywhere within the FCT.

Adeh stated: “The attention of the FCT Police Command has been drawn to publications circulating on social media, alleging an attempted assassination on Lt. Ahmed Yerima.

“The Command wishes to categorically state that no such incident has been reported or recorded anywhere within the Federal Capital Territory.

“The public is advised to disregard this false information and desist from spreading unverified claims capable of causing unnecessary panic.”

The PPRO, therefore, urged the Nigerian public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police division.

It is recalled that Yerima, November 11, 2025, had an altercation with Barr. Wike over a disputed plot of land, in Gaduwa District, said to belong to Vice-Admiral Zubairu Gambo (Rtd.) ex-Chief of Naval Staff.

Viral videos of the incident later in the social media space showed Yerima, while on security detail, blocking Wike’s team from accessing the site.

Amid the face-off, Minister Wike accused the retired Military Chief Gambo of carrying out an illegal development on the disputed land.

The Minister equally confronted Lt. Yerima at the site for allegedly assaulting personnel of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCTA) earlier dispatched to stop illegal construction work at the disputed site.

The minister was heard berating the officer, calling the Officer a “fool”, while interrogating his authority to prevent him from performing his duty.

The development has since generated heated debates and assumptions in public discourses.
