The Federal Government of Nigeria, again, has responded the United States (US) Government’s recent decision to designate the West African country as a “Country of Concern” in respect of alleged Christian genocide.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, who stated this Sunday, November 2, 2025, in a statement, said since his assumption of the Presidency May 29, 2023, his administration has maintained an open and active engagement with Christian and Muslim leaders alike.

Tinubu stated that the Nigerian Government yet “continues to address security challenges which affect citizens across faiths and regions.”

The President stated that the US Government’s characterisation of Nigeria as a religiously-intolerant country is off the mark.

Tinubu asserted: “The characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality, nor does it take into consideration the consistent and sincere efforts of the government to safeguard freedom of religion and beliefs for all Nigerians.”

He also explained that religious freedom and tolerance have been a core tenet of his administration’s collective identity.

It shall always remain so, as Nigeria opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it, stated he.

The President further noted: “Nigeria is a country with constitutional guarantees to protect citizens of all faiths.

“Our administration is committed to working with the United States government and the international community to deepen understanding and cooperation on protection of communities of all faiths.”
