Ogoniland: Tinubu directs stakeholder engagement as NNPCL, partners resume oil operations

As the Nigerian Government to finalises modalities for the NNPC Limited and partners to resume oil operations, ‎President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated Malam Nuhu Ribadu, National Security Adviser (NSA), to activate stakeholder engagement with Ogoni communities, in the Niger Delta region.

ConsumerConnect reports President Tinubu stated this Wednesday, September 24, 2025, while receiving the report of the Ogoni Consultations Committee, in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, FCT.

The President asserted: ‎”I am directing the NSA to immediately begin engagement with the Ogoni people and NNPCL, its joint venture partners, and all relevant stakeholders with a view to finalising modalities to begin operations.”

The Nigerian leader also emphasised that ongoing dialogue and reconciliation with the relevant communities in the Niger Delta region remained essential to achieving lasting peace, justice, and development across Ogoniland.

It is recalled that the immediate past administration handed operating of the Ogoni oil fields to the NNPCL and its joint venture partners.

Hitherto, International Oil Companies (IOCs) had suspended oil exploration in Ogoniland since 1993, after protests over environmental damage.

The development later culminated in the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other activists, also known as “Ogoni Nine”, in 1995.

Tinubu pledges support for peace, environmental cleanup, economic revival

‎Appealing for continued peace in the area President Tinubu said: ‎“I urge the Ogoni people across classes, communities and generations to close ranks, put this dark chapter behind us and move forward as a united community with a single voice.”

President Tinubu further assured of his administration’s support for peace, environmental cleanup, and economic revival in the region.

The President explained: ‎“I am encouraged by the overwhelming consensus of Ogoni communities to welcome resumption of oil production under the equitable terms.

‎”The government will deploy every resource to support your people in this march toward shared prosperity.”

‎Tinubu equally directed the Federal Minister of Environment to incorporate pollution remediation into the ongoing dialogues with the Ogoni people.

‎Tinubu took the opportunity to confer national honours posthumously, on late Ogoni leaders Albert Badey, Edward Kobani, Theophilus Orage, and Samuel Orage, collectively known as the “Ogoni Four” with the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

Ribadu: We’re focused on consolidating peace, addressing past injustices

‎Speaking at the forum, Malam Ribadu, Nigeria’s NSA, had said the consultations engaged all four Ogoni zones and the Diaspora.

According to him, the stakeholder engagement focused on structured participation, accelerated cleanup, and sustainable development of Ogoniland.

‎Ribadu, in an interaction with the State House Correspondents after the event, reaffirmed President Tinubu’s commitment to peace, stability, and inclusive growth across the Niger Delta region in the country.

He also assured the stakeholders of strict implementation of the Presidential directives aimed at consolidating peace while addressing past injustices in the region.

‎Tge NSA noted: ‎“Peace is being restored already, and Nigerians will soon see the benefits, not just in Ogoniland but across the Niger Delta and beyond.”

In his remarks at the meeting, ‎Prof. Don Baridam, Chairman of the Ogoni Consultations Committee, described the report submitted to the President as reflecting the “collective will” of the Ogoni people.

‎Prof. Vatican, therefore, urged the formation of an interagency taskforce to implement recommendations contained in the report, as a blueprint for progress.

‎Similarly, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, affirmed the confidence-building measures being implemented by President Tinubu has led to an improvement in the work done on the East-West Road, among other projects.

‎Fubara said the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology, in Rivers, was also a positive step in the right direction.
