Digital economy will drive Nigeria’s GDP to 21 percent by 2030 –Minister

The Federal Government has said Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will increase from 14.19 percent to 21 percent by 2030.

ConsumerConnect reports Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, Honourable Minister for Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (FMCIDE), noted this Thursday, September 4, 2025, at the National Digital Economy and e-Governance Bill Stakeholders’ Engagement, in Abuja, FCT.

Dr. Tijani, represented by Mr. Adeladan Rafiu, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, noted in Q1 2025, the country’s digital economy contributed N7 trillion to real GDP.

This, he stated, represented 14.19 percent of the total N49.34 trillion GDP for the national economy.

Tijani disclosed the sector, which currently contributes 16 percent to 18 percent of GDP, will with well-defined strategies, increase to 21 percent by 2030.

He also said: “These figures demonstrate both the current impact and the vast potential of a unified, digitally empowered economy driven by robust legislation.”

As regards the National Digital Economy and e-Governance Bill, Minister Tijani, who further spoke on the National Digital Economy and e-Governance Bill, said its overarching objective is to establish a robust legal and regulatory framework that will guide implementation of the Nigeria Digital Economy.

He stated: “We can ensure that this bill provides the solid legal foundation required to drive digital identity, aid governance and overall decision-making for Nigeria.”

Digital economy framework will deepen financial inclusion, says Inuwa

In his address at the forum, Malam Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, CCIE, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), said the bill would accelerate digitisation of the Nigerian economy.

Inuwa also stated: “Everybody is contributing to see how we can build a legal and institutional framework for our national digital economy.

“Government is doing a lot in digital literacy to educate our citizens to develop their digital fluency, so that everyone will be part of it and deepen the financial inclusion as well.”

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner of Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC), in his goodwill message, said that the digital economy sector is the most consistent in growth in Nigeria.

Olatunji noted: “I am not sure of any other sector where there is consistent progress in a particular sector and contributing highly to the growth of our economy.”

Earlier, Prof. Ibrahim Adeyanju, Director-General of Galaxy BackBone (GBB) Limited, had said digital economy could not be mentioned without a digital infrastructure, and this underscores the strategic importance of the Galaxy Backbone Limited to the project.

Prof. Adeyanju said: “The government has invested a lot in terms of infrastructure, which are there to support the digital economy.”
