Nigeria postpones special FEC session for late Buhari, declares Tuesday public holiday

The Federal Government of Nigeria has said the special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session slated for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in honour of late former President Muhammadu Buhari is postponed in view of the state funeral holding same day in his hometown, Daura, in Katsina State,

The government also declared Tuesday a public holiday in honour of the departed Nigerian leader.

Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who noted this development in a statement Monday, July 14, disclosed the Office of the Secretary to the Federal Government (SGF) would announce a new date after the funeral proceedings.

Earlier Sunday, President Tinubu had called for the special FEC session to honour his predecessor for his significant contributions to Nigeria.

The statement further noted that the remains of late President Buhari would arrive from London, in the United Kingdom (UK) Tuesday, by noon.

Thereafter, his remains would be committed to Mother Earth in accordance with Islamic rites in his home town, stated the Presidency.

President Buhari died Sunday in a London Clinic after a prolonged illness.

While President Tinubu has declared a national mourning with flags at half-staff for seven days, he also directed Vice-President Kashim Shettima and Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff (CoS) to the President, to join the Buhari family in London, condole with the family, and bring the former President’s remains back to Nigeria.
