Following certain media reports to the contrary, the Nigerian Presidency has clarified that Senator George Akume, former Governor of Benue State, remains the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

Hitherto, there were reports that Senator Akume had stepped down as the SGF to become the new National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, replacing ConsumerConnect reports Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, who resigned his appointment Friday, June 27, 2025.

Ganduje, a former Kano State Governor, had resigned as APC National Chairman, paving the way for the party’s Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Bukar Dalori, to take over.

Dalori, from the North-East, has assumed office as the Acting National Chairman, pending the meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party to be summoned immediately to fill the vacancy created by the resignation.

Reacting to the insunuation in the public space, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, at the weekend, stated asserted that “there has been no change in the status of His Excellency, Senator George Akume, as Secretary to the Government of the Federation.”

Onanuga stated: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, currently in Saint Lucia, has not made any new appointments. The information circulating about Akume’s replacement is untrue. Agents of mischief fabricated it.”

The statement also noted: “The Presidency advises Nigerians to disregard the fake news.”

In regard to the former party Chairman’s resignation, Mr. Felix Morka, Esq., National Publicity Secretary of the party, reportedly said Ganduje’s resignation was to enable him to attend to urgent and important personal matters.

Nonetheless, there are feelers in the public domain that the former National Chairman resigned due to “increasing resistance” from within the ruling, particularly from those who viewed his appointment as a violation of the party’s extant internal zoning arrangements.

It is recalled Dr. Ganduje from the North-West zone of Nigeria, assumed leadership of the party in August 2023, following the resignation of his predecessor, Abdullahi Adamu, from the North Central zone.

He was also the Governor of Kano State from May 2015 to May 2023.
