The United State (US) Supreme Court Friday, May 30, 2025, ruled the Donald Trump administration could temporarily revoke the legal status of about 530,000 migrants in the American country.

ConsumerConnect gathered the US Supreme Court’s order is yet in continuation of the administration’s moves to deport hundreds of thousands of immigrants to their home countries since January this year.

The ruling suspended a previous Federal Judge’s order stopping the Trump administration from ending the “parole” immigration programme, established by former President Joe Biden.

The “parole” programme has protected immigrants fleeing from economic and political dislocations in their home countries, agency report said.

The US Government had announced the programme would allow immigrants “temporary status” to work and live in the US for two years because of “urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit.”

The latest US Court’s ruling puts about 530,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela at risk of being deported any time soon.

The latest ruling is coming after the Supreme Court, earlier May 2025, had permitted Trump officials to revoke Temporary Protected Status (TPS) – a separate programme – for some 350,000 Venezuelan immigrants living and working in the US.

Trump’s administration ends humanitarian parole (CHNV) programmes

Humanitarian parole programmes have been used for decades to allow immigrants fleeing war and other tumultuous conditions in their home countries to come to the US, including Cubans in the 1960s following the revolution.

The Biden administration also established a parole programme in 2022 for Ukrainians fleeing after Russia’s invasion.

2 Justices dissent from court ruling

Justices Ketanji Brown Jackson and Sonia Sotomayor, two of the Court’s three liberal Justices, however, dissented in the ruling.

In her dissent, Justice Jackson reportedly wrote that the court’s order would “have the lives of half a million migrants unravel all around us before the courts decide their legal claims.”

Since his return to the White House January 20, 2025, the Trump administration had filed an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court after a Federal Judge, in Massachusetts, which previously blocked the administration from ending the programme, also known as CHNV humanitarian parole.

Commenting on the ruling, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller told CNN, that the Trump administration “celebrated” the opportunity to deport 500,000 “invaders” (immigrants).

“The Supreme Court justly stepped in.”

Trump, on the day he took office this year, signed an Executive Order (EO), directing the US Department of Homeland Security to discontinue Biden administration’s parole programmes.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, later in March 2025, officially announced the end of CHNV humanitarian parole.

Subsequently, several immigrant rights groups and migrants from the programme sued the Trump administration over the decision.

They have argued the affected immigrants could “face serious risks of danger, persecution and even death”, if deported back to their home countries.
