Safety: NMDPRA bans fuel tankers laden with 60,000-litre products

As part of efforts at curbing fuel tanker accidents, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has banned 60000-litre petrol tankers from operating on roads across the country.

ConsumerConnect reports the country, in recent times, has experienced a series of fuel tanker accidents.

However, in a bid to address the incidence of tanker accidents, Ogbugo Ukoha, Executive Director of Distribution Systems, Storage, and Retailing Infrastructure, in a briefing, Wednesday, February 19, 2025, in Abuja, FCT, said The Authority’s ban on 60000-litre petrol tankers would become effective from March 1 this year.

Ukoha explained: “Beginning from March 1, 2025, trucks with a capacity in excess of 60,000 litres will not be allowed to load in any loading depot of petroleum products.

“By Q4 (Fourth Quarter) of 2025, we will also preclude the loading or transportation of petroleum products of any truck in excess of 45,000 litres.”
