The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) intensifies its consumer education and enlightenment initiatives to address apparent concerns with emerging issues of fairness, transparency, and Mobile Network Operators’ (MNOs) Quality of Service (QoS), and telecoms consumers’ Quality of Experience (QoE) regarding data, call and voice tariff prices/offerings in the country’s digital space.

ConsumerConnect reports the telecoms sector regulatory Commission, in partnership with the Association of Licensed Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ALTON), has activated a joint consumer sensitisation campagin through the smart ‘Ways to Save Data!’ series to empower telecoms subscribers to stay in control of their data usage in the country.

The Consumer Affairs Bureau (CAB), one of the key departments of the NCC, has been in the vanguard of educating telecoms consumers on how to use, save more data, and can control your data usage.

The NCC’s Bureau, against the backdrop of the increasing concerns over transparency in data usage and depletion issues recently activated a number of consumer education initiatives, including ‘Stream smartly!’, ‘Data Tip!’, ‘Stay in control of your data usage!’, and ‘Get the best from your data’ enlightenment series in the Nigerian telecoms space.

The CAB, created September 2001, is affirmed by the provisions in Chapter VII of Nigerian Communications Act (NCA 2003), in particular, Part I of the chapter which deals with consumer protection and Quality of Service (QoS), stated the Commission in a piece published on its corporate Web site.

Top ways to prevent data depletion on mobile phones, other devices

The telecoms sector regulatory Commission, in its recent consumer education and sensitisation series, unveiled the following eight practical ways of preventing data depletion on mobile phones, or other electronic devices: These are:

1. Monitor your data usage: Check your data usage regularly to see how much you’re using and adjust your usage accordingly. Most phones have built-in data usage trackers, or you can use third-party apps to monitor your usage.

2. Use Wi-Fi: Connect to Wi-Fi whenever possible to avoid using your cellular data. You can connect to Wi-Fi at home, work, or in public places like cafes or libraries.

3. Turn off automatic updates: You can turn off automatic updates for apps, operating systems, and other software. Instead, update them manually when you’re connected to Wi-Fi.

4. Restrict background data usage: Some apps continue to consume data even when you’re not actively using them. You can restrict background data usage for specific apps to prevent them from using up your data allowance.

5. Download content for offline use: Download movies, TV shows, music, and podcasts for offline use when you’re connected to Wi-Fi. This way, you can watch or listen to them without using your data allowance.

6. Disable location services: GPS and other location services can consume a lot of data. You can disable location services for specific apps or turn them off altogether.

7. Install ad-blockers: Ad-blockers can prevent ads from consuming your data allowance.

8. Consider a larger data plan: If you consistently find yourself running out of data, you may want to consider upgrading to a larger data plan.

The Commission, therefore, urged consumers to apply the above-mentioned data-saving tips.

“By following these suggestions, you can reduce the amount of data you use and prevent unnecessary data depletion on your mobile phone,” stated the NCC.
