IIC appoints NCC’s Maida Board Director, lauds his ‘pivotal role’ in telecoms ecosystem

The International Institute of Communications (IIC), in London, United Kingdom (UK), has appointed Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) as a Director on the Board of the global organisation.

ConsumerConnect reports the IIC is an international organisation that promotes the growth and development of the telecommunications and media industries worldwide.

The Institute, in a recent statement announcing Dr. Maida’s appointment as a Board Director, said the NCC EVC/CEO “plays a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape.

“Under his leadership, the NCC continues to advance connectivity, foster innovation, and promote a competitive and inclusive telecommunications industry.”

Prior to his latest international engagement, Maida has been a key player in improving telecommunications sector with the introduction of far-reaching initiatives.

These include focus on “consumer-centric telecoms industry” that emphasises the need for service providers to boost consumers’ Quality of Experience (QoE), ensure fairness and transparency in service tariffs.

This initiative also embraces data consumption and billing transparency towards empowering telecoms consumers in “a truly consumer-centric telecoms industry, in which consumers feel valued, informed, empowered, and satisfied with the services they receive” in the Nigerian telecoms space.

In regard to the EVC/CEO’s “consumer-centric” leadership philosophy of the NCC for service providers’ excellent Quality of Service (QoS) delivery to consumers, the industry has witnessed enhanced connectivity, innovation, and a more competitive, inclusive telecoms ecosystem for stakeholders in recent times.

Maida’s profile at a glance

Dr. Aminu Maida holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Bath, an M.Eng in Information Systems Engineering from Imperial College, London, in the United Kingdom (UK), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship from the Cambridge Judge Business School.

His career includes significant contributions to leading global organisations such as British Telecom, Cisco Systems, and EE Limited.

The NCC Chief also had served as a pioneering engineering team member at UbiquiSys Limited, a groundbreaking small-cell technology startup acquired by Cisco Systems in 2013.

Dr. Maida was the Executive Director of Technology and Operations at the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement Systems Plc (NIBSS).

While there, he spearheaded the modernisation of the West African country’s central digital payments infrastructure, reinforcing its role as a critical enabler of Nigeria’s financial ecosystem.

It is, therefore, noted that Maida’s rich industry and leadership experience makes him a great addition to the IIC Board, where he will continue to drive innovation and development in telecommunications and media worldwide.

About IIC policy agenda for global operations

At over 50 in an era of constant digital disruption, the IIC has enabled the open balanced discussion that informs the policy agenda since 1969.

It stated: “If our story over the last 50 plus years has anything to reveal, it’s the role IIC members around the world can play in shaping a future from which all of society can benefit.”

In regard to the impact of the organisation with its global reach, the IIC averred that for 50 years, “we’ve been holding events around the world, connecting communications regulators, experts and innovators.”

Meetings create opportunities for open dialogue, the exchange of ideas and the shaping of digital policy.

The Institute further stated that members value the opportunity to gather fresh insights, share their viewpoints and influence the discussion agenda.

According to IIC, about 800 of such events and meetings have been held in over 60 cities around the world.

The IIC further disclosed that participants in the Institute’s events, meetings and conferences include policymakers, telecoms operators, content and media, technology and networks, lawyers, analysts and consultants, and other professionals, cutting across the Americas, Europe, Asia, Pacific, Middle East, Africa, and other lands.

“The IIC’s Annual Conference takes place in a different city each year,” said the Institute.
