The Nigerian  Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has asserted it is not the responsibility of power consumers to procure transformers, cables and poles for the electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos).

ConsumerConnect  reports

NERC, which stated this in a blog note via its social media platforms at the weekend.

The power sector regulator urged consumers to report any DisCos that refuse to provide electric cables and transformers within their networks.

It is recalled that NERC March 22 this year, had cautioned electricity consumers against procurement of transformers without a formal agreement with their electricity distribution companies in the country.

According to NERC, DisCos have to provide every electricity facility to consumers, including poles and others.

The Commission also stated: “It is the duty of your DisCo to provide transformers, cables and poles.

“If your DisCo is asking you to provide any of these, kindly reach out to this dedicated email and phone number set-up to address these issues; Email: idn@nerc.gov.ng  and Mobile No.: 07074865354.”

It further said NERC  also encouraged the public to use the call centre for any form of complaints by dialling the numbers “02013444331 or 09088999244 or send an email to complaints@nerc.gov.ng.”

In regard to the mandate of the electricity providers, Aisha Mahmud, Commissioner and Customer Affairs, reportedly affirmed it is not the responsibility of electricity consumers to procure transformers for the DisCos.

Mahmud, however, clarified that if such must happen, both consumers and DisCos must sign an undertaking in this regard.

NERC as well urged consumers to notify the DisCo within their jurisdiction of any outstanding electricity bills before moving into new apartments.
