Tinubu fires 5, nominates 7 new Ministers and scraps 2 Ministries in cabinet reshuffle

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting Wednesday, October 23, 2024, in the Council Chambers of the State House, in Abuja, FCT, announced the reshufflement of his Federal cabinet of Ministers.

The Presidency, in a “Statement on the Restructuring of Ministries and Ministerial Portfolios” issued  Wednesday, disclosed President Tinubu has scrapped the Ministry of Niger Delta Development and Ministry of Sports Development, and merged them with other Ministries in the redeployment of 10 Ministers.

The Federal Government stated: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR has approved the immediate implementation of eight far-reaching actions to reinvigorate the Administration’s capacity for optimal efficiency pursuant of his commitment to deliver on his promises to Nigerians.”

Tinubu also sacked five current Ministers for Women Affairs, Tourism, Education, Youth Development, and Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development respectively.

ConsumerConnect reports Tinubu, during the FEC meeting, sacked Uju-Ken Ohanenye as Minister for Women Affairs; Lola Ade-John as Minister for Tourism; Prof. Tahir Mamman as Minister for Education; Abdullahi Gwarzo as Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development; and Jamila Ibrahim as Minister for Youth Development.

The President equally nominated Bianca Odumegu-Ojukwu, wife of late Chukwuemeka Odumegu-Ojukwu, as the Minister of State Foreign Affairs, while Nentawe Yilwatda as the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, officially bringing an end to the tenure of suspended Betta Edu.

The President also nominated Maigari Dingyadi as the Minister for Labour and Employment, Jumoke Oduwole as the Minister for Industry, Idi Maiha as Minister for the newly-created Livestock Development Ministry, Yusuf Ata as the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, with Suwaiba Ahmad as Minister of State for Education.

With 10 ministers to new ministerial portfolios, including seven fresh Ministers, the fresh appointees are now subject to confirmation of the Senate in the National Assembly (NASS), in Abuja.

President Tinubu’s move was sequel Nigerians’ expectation with growing calls for the current administration to rejig his cabinet, according to report.

There have been growing calls for the President to reshuffle his cabinet as many Nigerians reportedly are not impressed by the performance of “some of the ministers”, especially against the backdrop of the current high inflation, economic hardship, and rising insecurity in the country.

Projecting Wednesday’s decision to effect changes in the Federal cabinet earlier, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, late September 2024, had stated that the Nigerian leader would reshuffle his cabinet, but did not give a timeframe to the reorganisation at the time.

Earlier August 2023, President Tinubu, who is a former Lagos State Governor and chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, had appointed 48 Ministers three months after his inauguration in Abuja.

Government scraps Ministries of Niger Delta, Sports Development

Earlier on Wednesday, President Tinubu had announced the scrapping of the Ministry of Niger Delta Development, and announced the Ministry of Regional Development as a replacement to oversee the activities of all the regional development commissions.

All the existing regional development commissions to be under the supervision of the new Ministry are the Niger Delta Development Commission, the South-East Development Commission, the North-East Development and the North-West Development Commission.

Tinubu also scrapped the Ministry of Sports Development and transferred its functions to the National Sports Commission to “develop a vibrant sports economy”.

Besides, Tinubu approved the merger of the Federal Ministry of Tourism and the Federal Ministry of Arts and Culture to become the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy.

He also noted “the appointment of Shehu Dikko as Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC).

President appreciates outgoing Ministers, tasks new and reassigned ones on national service

The President stated: “The appointment of Sunday Akin Dare as Special Adviser to the President on Public Communication and Orientation, working from the Ministry of Information and National Orientation.”

Tinubu further appreciated the outgoing members of the Federal Executive Council for their service to Nigeria while wishing them the best in their future endeavours.

The Nigerian leader as well charged the newly-appointed Ministers and their reassigned colleagues to see their appointments as a call to serve the country.

All appointees, President Tinubu stated, must understand the current administration’s eagerness and determination to set Nigeria on the path to irreversible growth, and invest the best of their abilities in the actualisation of the government’s policies, programmes, initiatives, and priorities.
