The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) Plc and  Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), in Lagos State of Nigeria, have announced to customers, and power consumers on their franchise networks still using the UNISTAR prepayment meters to apply for new ones by Thursday, November 14, 2024.

The electricity Distribution Company (DisCo), which disclosed this development in a statement Monday, October 14, via its social media handle, said it would discontinue the Unistar meter model effective from the said date.

ConsumerConnect reports the UNISTAR prepayment electricity meters is one of the first brands the company deployed to power consumers over 10 years ago in parts of Lagos and Ogun States, South-West Nigeria.

The meter brand was the first set of prepayment meters to be installed during the era of the old Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).

According to the DisCos, the meters require taking their smart cards to any of their cash offices to recharge.

The IKEDC, in a public notice also urged electricity consumers still using the model to apply for new meters via its Web site.

The power provider said: “Dear Esteemed Customer, please note all Unistar meters will be phased out by 14th November 2024 as TID rollover beckons.

“Kindly visit smartkyc.ikejaelectric.com today to apply for new prepaid meter.”

It urged affected customers to apply for new meters at: smartkyc.ikejaelectric.com.

Energy consumers will no longer be able to vend energy units on the Unistar meters from November 14, the DisCo explained in the message.

The message further stated: “Please note all Unistar meters will be phased out by 14th November 2024 as TID rollover beckons.

“Apply for a prepaid meter today to avoid estimate billing.”

EKEDC urges consumers to avoid being migrated to estimated (postpaid) billing

In a related development, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company, in a notice Friday, October 11, also announced that UNISTAR meters would be phased out by November 14, urging customers to apply for new meters to avoid being switched to postpaid billing.

ConumerConnect reports the company emphasised that UNISTAR meters are “no longer compatible with the new STS 2.0 metering system”, which is being rolled out across its network.

EKEDC stated: “UNISTAR meters are not compatible with the new STS 2.0 system. Kindly apply for a new meter to avoid being moved to postpaid billing.”
