Tinubu urges protesters to embrace dialogue as government addresses concerns

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appealed to #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters and the protest organisers to refrain from violence and destruction.

The President, who made the appeal in his nationwide broadcast protest morning Sunday, August 4, 2024, stressed that his administration is committed to listening to and addressing their concerns.

Tinubu also acknowledged the pain and frustration driving the protests but warned that violence would only tear the nation apart.

The Nigerian leader stated in his address: “My dear Nigerians, especially our youth, I have heard you loud and clear.

“I understand the pain and frustration that drive these protests, and I want to assure you that our government is committed to listening and addressing the concerns of our citizens.”

He, however, cautioned that “we must not let violence and destruction tear our nation apart. We must work together to build a brighter future, where every Nigerian can live with dignity and prosperity.”

Efforts to stabilise economy, improve infrastructure, and create opportunities for youths

President Tinubu, in his national broadcast also highlighted his administration’s ongoing efforts at stabilising the Nigerian economy, improving infrastructure, and creating opportunities for young people.

He further assured that results would soon be visible and concrete, and urged them not to be misled by those who claim the government does not care.

The President said: “Although there have been many dashed hopes in the past, we are in a new era of Renewed Hope.

“We are working hard for you, and the results will soon be visible and concrete for everyone to see, feel, and enjoy.”

He charged Nigerians: “Let us work together to build a brighter future for ourselves and for generations to come.

“Let us choose hope over fear, unity over division, and progress over stagnation. The economy is recovering; please, don’t shut out its oxygen.”

The Nigerian as well emphasised the importance of choosing hope over fear, unity over division, and progress over stagnation.

Tinubu also cautioned the citizens against allowing “enemies of democracy” to use the protests to promote an unconstitutional agenda that would set Nigeria back on its democratic journey.

The President said: “Now that we have been enjoying democratic governance for 25 years, do not let the enemies of democracy use you to promote an unconstitutional agenda that will set us back on our democratic journey. FORWARD EVER, BACKWARD NEVER!

He directed the security operatives to maintain peace, law and order while respecting human rights conventions.

“The safety and security of all Nigerians are paramount,” declared the President.

On measures on improving agricultural production, food security

President Tinubu, in his broadcast, enumerated his administration’s measures steps towards accelerating food production in Nigeria.

He disclosed that his administration has a target to cultivate over 10 million hectares of land to grow essential food crops in the country.

“Our target is to cultivate more than 10 million hectares of land to grow what we eat.

“The Federal Government will provide all necessary incentives for this initiative, whilst the states provide the land, which will put millions of our people to work and further increase food production,” said he.

The President also emphasised that the Federal Government would provide necessary incentives, while states of the Federation would provide land in move to put millions of Nigerians to work and increase food production in the West African country.

He further noted that the current administration has already ordered mechanised farming equipment, including tractors and planters, worth billions of Naira as part of measures at enhancing agricultural productivity in Nigeria.

Tinubu stated: “We have also ordered mechanised farming equipment such as tractors and planters, worth billions of Naira from the United States, Belarus, and Brazil. I can confirm to you that the equipment is on the way.”

According to him, the farming equipment are on their way to Nigeria, indicating his administration’s commitment to tackling food insecurity, and ensuring that Nigerian consumers have access to affordable and nutritious food.
