President Tinubu to address Nigerians August 4

Against the backdrop of the ongoing nationwide protest over the current economic challenges, which entered the third day at the weekend, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will address Nigerians in a national broadcast Sunday, August 4, 2024, at 7:00 a.m.

Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, who disclosed this in a statement Saturday, August 3, said the Television, Radio, and other electronic media outlets are enjoined to plug into the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) for the broadcast.

“The broadcast will be repeated on the network services of the NTA and the FRCN at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on the same day,” stated Ngelale.

It is noted that the #EndBadGovernmentInNigeria protest organisers, ‘Take It Back’ movement, and other civil society organisations had hinged their action on the current economic hardship and attendant high inflation, largely induced by the removal of the controversial fuel subsidy, harmonisation of Foreign Exchange and Naira devaluation, and the recent hike in electricity tariff, and others.

Subsequently, as the protest entered the third day Saturday, scores of Nigerians and groups have called on President Tinubu to address the country, and dialogue with the protest organisers to douse further tension in the economy.

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party also urged the President to address Nigerians amidst the nationwide protest.

According to the party, Tinubu’s his silence amid the confusing atmosphere in Nigeria is worrisome, and has worsened agitations.

Debo Ologunagba, National Publicity Secretary of PDP, at the weekend, urged the President to urgently address Nigerian consumers in respect of measures to reduce prices of petroleum products, curb Naira free fall, and other biting economic issues in the country.
