In appreciating the Nigerian workforce, the Nigerian Government has celebrated and rewarded certain Civil Servants for their outstanding performances during this year’s Federal Civil Service Rewards and Recognition.

ConsumerConnect reports the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (HoCSF), on the occasion of the 2024 Civil Service Week’s Gala and Awards Night, held at the weekend in Abuja, FCT, awarded 40 Civil Servants in different categories for outstanding performances in the Civil Service in the past year.

Earlier in his remarks at the event, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had emphasised the significance of the Civil Service in running the affairs of his administration.

Represented on the occasion by Sen. George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), President Tinubu affirmed the Civil Service is the bedrock, engine, and locomotive of government, which are necessary for the government to deliver public goods to citizens.

He stated: “Those who say that a nation is as good as its civil service are close to the truth. You are the real establishment that remains to pilot government affairs as we politicians come and go.

“As politicians, we are no more than drivers of the locomotives that you provide.”

Speaking at the Gala and Awards Night also, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, Head of Civil Service of the Federation, on the occasion, said: “After a rigorous selection process in line with the Service-Wide Criteria and Weighting, ‘Thirty-Nine Nominees’ scored above the cut-off mark, and were selected for the 2024 Edition of the Federal Civil Service Rewards and Recognition.”

Yemi-Esan said: “The standing Service-Wide Awards Selection Committee (SWASCo), by its mandates screened nominations made by the Ministerial Selection Committee of MDAs and selected deserving officers for the various categories of awards.

“The committee comprises representatives from both public and private sector organisations.

“These include the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM), the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, SERVICOM, the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council and the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.”

Categories of Awards for outstanding Civil Servants

According to the HoCSF, the award categories are:

  1. Presidential Distinguished Public Service Career Award
  2. Presidential Civil Service Merit Award
  3. Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Award
  4. The Public Service Excellence Award
  5. 2024 Sports achievements Awards.

Yemi-Esan said that the set criteria for the 2024 Sports Achievement Award were considered by the number of medals won at the 2023 Edition of the Federation of Public Service Games (FEPSGA).

She also noted: “Nominations were received from 31 Ministries and Extra-Ministerial offices, out of which 11 nominees won no medals. Therefore, 20 nominees were assessed in line with the criteria.

“Three Ministries who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to Work-Life balance of their staff will receive Awards and commendation letters will be presented to their respective permanent secretaries to motivate other ministries to emulate their laudable performance.”

The Star Prize is a Brand New 2023 JAC JS4 Luxury Model SUV; Next is a 2-Bedroom Semi-Detached Bungalow; and the third top prize is a serviced Plot of Land measuring 400sqm.

According to her, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) donated 6 Toyota Camry Cars in support of the 2024 Civil Service Week, which have been distributed to the fourth to nineth positions.

The Head of Civil Service also restated the need for government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to remain committed to implementing and strengthening their recognition and reward systems.
