Nigerian Government, Cross River deepen collaboration to sanitise mining sector for development

The Federal Government of Nigeria and Cross River State are enhancing their collaboration to sanitise the mining sector of the economy, and address illegal mining operations in the South-South state.

Speaking while receiving Governor (Sen.) Bassey Otu of Cross River State, in his office, in Abuja, FCT, Dr. Oladele Alake, Honourable Minister for Solid Minerals Development, highlighted that the visit exemplified the renewed spirit of cooperation between the Federal Government and states in harnessing the country’s mineral resources towards fostering economic development.

Segun Tomori, Special Assistant to the Minister on Media, Tuesday, June 11, 2024, noted in a statement Dr. Alake said: “The governor’s visit is a clear example of the collaboration we are aiming for between the Federal Government and subnational authorities.

“Our goal is to sanitise the mining sector, secure mining areas, and create a conducive environment for investors.”

In his remarks during the visit to Alake’s office, Governor Otu emphasised Cross-River State’s commitment to leveraging its vast mineral resources for state development.

Otu also stressed the importance of partnering with the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development to combat illegal mining activities in the country.

The governor stated: “We needed to come and look at the laws and regulations guiding proper mining processes.

“This will help us make informed decisions in collaboration with the Federal Government to clean up the mining sector.

“We are also exploring Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) to tap into our vast solid mineral potential.”

Cross River State is on the verge of joining other states in operating a mining company, having applied for a license as a limited liability company, stated Otu.
