251 Resource looters in the net over illicit mining in Zamfara

Illegal mining of Nigeria’s mineral deposits has not abated as the joint security agencies, again, have arrested about 251 illegitimate miners in three local government areas of the Zamfara State.

It was learnt that Mohammed Shehu, Spokesman of the Zamfara State Police Command, a joint team of soldiers, Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) recently raided the mining sites in Anka, Bukkuyum and Gummi Local Government Areas (LGAs).

Report specified that the combined team of security agencies was able to arrest the economic saboteurs sequel to intelligence information about the activities of the illegal miners, including 250 Nigerians and a Burkinabe national.

Among other exhibits recovered from the illicit miners are 12 pumping machines, 29 motorcycles, chemicals for making gold, and unrefined gold sifting materials, stated the report.

According to Police Spokesman Shehu, all the suspects have confessed to the offence, and they would be arraigned when the court resumes sitting in the state.

He however, warned that until the Federal Government lifts the ban on mining activities in Nigeria, anybody who goes against the mining regulations would be arrested and severely dealt with according to the law of the land.
