OAU Management urges calm as Amphitheatre ceilings collapse, injure students

A number of students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Nigeria, Thursday, May 16, 2024, sustained various degrees of injuries as downpour and whirlwind collapsed the popular Amphitheatre ceilings.

ConsumerConnect learnt the students in the facility were receiving a lecture when the wooden ceiling collapsed during heavy rainfall.

Commenting on the incident, Abiodun Olanrewaju, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the University, in a statement issued Thursday, confirmed the incident, and noted the affected students were given prompt medical attention.

Olanrewaju stated other affected students whose cases were critical were taken to Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), in Ile-Ife.

According to Olanrewaju, following the incident, Prof.  Simeon Adebayo Bamire, Vice-Chancellor of OAU, also led other Principal Officers to the Medical and Health Centre of the University, as well as the OAUTHC to ensure the injured students were given adequate medical attention.

The University PRO, therefore, appealed for calm and urged students and staff to go about their academic and administrative activities without any form of apprehension.

Meanwhile, the Management of the University have sealed off the Amphitheatre, venue of the unfortunate incident, until further notice, stated Olanrewaju.
