In line its mandate to protect Nigerian consumers’ wellbeing against counterfiet and unhealthy products and other commodities, the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has said its enforcement team, at the weekend, targeted markets in Garki, Wuse 2, Utako, Gwarinpa, Kugbo, Nyanya and Mararaba areas of Abuja, FCT, seizing counterfeit cosmetics and drugs in the process.

ConsumerConnect reports the country’s health regulatory agency in a statement via the verified X account at NAFDAC@NafdacAgency disclosed that its operatives, during the operation discovered and confiscated counterfeit cosmetics at Sahad Stores Limited, H-Medix, and various other markets, as well as fake drugs in some others.

The agency also noted that as the operatives raided the supermarkets in the past week in Abuja, they “seized counterfeit products worth ₦50 million.

“This week, NAFDAC conducted raids on popular supermarkets in Abuja, including Sahad Stores and H-Medix, in Wuse 2 and Gwarinpa, uncovering counterfeit products on display,” it stated.

Sahad Stores involved in counterfeiting and consumer exploitation scandal again?

It is recalled that the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) earlier in the year had caught Sahad Stores and sealed off the popular superstore for price gouging.

Price gouging is the practice of increasing the prices of goods, services, or commodities to a level much higher than is considered reasonable or fair.

Dr. Adamu Abdullahi, Acting Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of the Commission, who led the enforcement team, had disclosed the development February 16, 2024, and said that the regulator shut the store during an enforcement exercise at Garki 2, in Abuja.

Abdullahi had urged businesses engaging in activities contributing to price gouging in the food chain sector of the Nigerian economy to desist immediately, or face the full force of the law.
