Explosion: Ogun seals off steel mills company, 9 persons injured, buildings damaged + Photos

Following gas explosion that occurred Sunday, March 10, 2024, in the company, the Ogun State Government has shut Phoenix Steel Mills Industries Limited, located at Ogijo, in Sagamu Local Government of the state with immediate effect.

ConsumerConnect reports Mr. Ola Oresanya, Honourable Commissioner for Environment in Ogun State announced the immediate closure of the iron rods manufacturing industry, after an on-the-spot assessment of the explosion area.

The Ogun State Government stated the gas explosion had affected almost the entire production line of the company.

Oresanya also said under the rule of engagement with all the Industries in the state, the state government, after sealing off the facility, would do a thorough investigation of the immediate and remote causes of the explosions with a view of knowing how to prevent future occurrence.

The Commissioner further disclosed that investigation into the incident would reveal, in clear terms, the condition under which the company could operate so the workers, as well as lives and property in the immediate communities which were affected by the gas explosion, could be adequately protected.

Meanwhile, seven workers of Phoenix Steel Mills Industries Limited, who were seriously injured in the explosion are currently hospitalised in a hospital in nearby Ikorodu, in Lagos State, the Ogun State Government said.

Blast explosion shatters windows, damages buildings -Police Spokesperson

Speaking on the incident, Omotola Odutola, Spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, also confirmed the development at the company, according to report.

Odutola said: “According to an eyewitness account, the blast explosion was attributed to a cylinder explosion that happened at the melting point area, affecting nine staff members who sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

“They were taken to a private hospital in Ikorodu, Lagos State.”

She also noted: “The explosion impacted nearby houses causing damage from the blast. Houses and window frames were reportedly cracked due to the vibrations from the blast.”

The Police authorities explained the incident enraged community youths, who even attempted to attack the company over the blast.

However, efforts by the policemen and Nigerian Army detachment of 174 Battalion at Odogiyan, in Ikorodu, were visibly on guard to intervene in the ensuing confusion.

Odutola stated: “More Security reinforcements have been deployed to prevent further uproar or disturbances from angry mobs, who may want to take advantage of the distress.”

On the state of affairs in the area, the Police Spokesperson said: “The situation is under control and close monitoring. There is no indication for panic, whereas further updates will be communicated to members of the public.”
