Nigerian Government offers free train ride, 50 percent subsidised Yuletide inter-state bus fares (Approved Route List)

The Federal Government has assured Nigerian consumers that logistics for the 50 percent discount on road transport on 22 major routes across the country from December 21, 2023, has been finalised.

Dr. Oladele Alake, Honourable Minister for Solid Minerals Development and Chairman of the Presidential Inter-ministerial Committee on Subsidised Yuletide Inter-state Transport, disclosed this development Wednesday, December 20, in Abuja, FCT.

ConsumerConnect reports Dr. Alake in company with Dr. Saidu Alkali, Honourable Minister for Transportation; Mohammed Idris, Minister for Information and National Orientation; and Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, earlier Wednesday afternoon had announced a Presidential intervention to reduce the costs of inter-state road transport by 50 percent.

The government also announced that commuting on railways would be free from 21st December 21, 2023 to January 4, 2024.

It is noted that the Federal Government targets to lift 5,000,000 commuters during the Yuletide season with the 50 percent transportation rebate.

Participating companies include, GIG (God is Good), Chisco Transport, Young Shall Grow, God Bless Ezenwata and Area Motor.

Addressing the reporters after a follow-up meeting, alongside Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Honourable Minister for Interior, and his Transportation, Dr. Alake restated that all was set for the effective implementation of the initiative which he emphasised is aimed at easing the burden of high cost of transport on Nigerians, this festive season.

In his remarks at the briefing, Dr. Alkali also revealed that the Federal Government is using the structured Luxury Buses Association of Nigeria to operate the discounted fares in the 22 routes, across the West African country.

The Minister for Transportation stated that implementation of the initiative would commence Thursday, December 21, while the specified routes would also be announced shortly.

On security at mining sites

Commenting on the new security architecture for the mining in Nigeria, Segun Tomori, Special Assistant to the Minister on Solid Minerals Development, stated Hon. Tunji-Ojo, Interior Minister, said that the National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) would play a significant role in the new security architecture in the works.

The Minister stressed that collaboration with the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development in that regard remains unchanged.
